Happily Married and Plagued by Repeat Vaginal Infections

She is blissfully married to the man of her dreams, and together they enjoy great sex. The only dark spot in this match made in heaven is infection – vaginal infection, that is. She suffers from recurring problems with yeast and bacteria without knowing why. Here, we give her a run-down of possible causes and recommend an herbal solution to stop her embarrassment.

Case #: 1417

Concern:

I met my husband five years ago, and when I met him, I knew he was the one. We have had the most wonderful sex I could have ever hoped for, and he is my first steady sexual partner. I used to have a lot of problems with recurring yeast and bacterial infections, but they never caused any sexual problems. Recently, however, the infections have returned. What could be the cause behind the infections?

Discussion:

Just having a vagina can sometimes be embarrassing – ever heard of the terms axe wound or great black hole? So when something goes wrong down there, the humiliation can be tough to take. But the vagina does occasionally expel fluids and odors, not because a lady is licentious or unkempt, but because it uses both to reflect its health.

The Vagina: More Than What Meets the Eye

The vagina is perhaps the most underrated of all body parts because it’s dismissed as “smelly” and “moist” – a word considered to be among the worst in the English language. But a healthy vagina does not smell bad. It instead has a musky odor with lush fluids that keep muscles strong and tight. Just as some women have drier skin than others, so too do some have wetter vaginas. This doesn’t indicate trouble – it’s simply a fact of nature.

Friendly flora in the vagina keeps “bad” bacteria at bay. The first job of these floras is to populate the vagina so space isn’t left for harmful bacteria. They also release chemicals – lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide – that maintain a highly acidic environment. The acidity discourages growth of bad bacteria and also contributes to healthy vaginal discharge.

Flora work hard inside the vagina, and their numbers tend to be large so they quickly repopulate. But they are susceptible to numerous outside influences. At the top of this list is the menstrual cycle, which causes significant hormonal fluctuations that impact discharge, microbes and acidity. The week before a woman’s period is especially critical because that’s when the vagina is least lubricated. The period itself can also be problematic because blood is alkaline, not acidic, meaning it can disrupt fragile pH levels. Semen is also alkaline, which explains why frequent sex causes infections in some women.

An Assault on the Vagina

As you can see, a variety of causes contribute to bacterial infections in the vagina. But we’ve not exhausted this list yet. Antibiotics also participate because they don’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. They instead kill both, which allows yeast to rapidly take control. Symptoms of a yeast infection include itching, pain and swelling in the vulva; thick discharge; and an overall feeling of misery. Medications, therefore, should be used with caution.

One of the roles of estrogen is to provide sugars that feed flora. Unfortunately, unhealthy bacteria also eat this food, meaning too much sugar can cause a yeast overgrowth. To minimize this potential, some women may need to avoid sweet foods and beverages.

Remember what we said about vaginal misconceptions – that it’s nothing more than a stinky black hole? Many women try to discourage this label and worse by using chemical-laden sprays, wipes, deodorants, and soaps. But these also disturb natural pH levels, and a number of infections arise from “over-cleansing” the vagina. Warm water and gentle soap are all you really need.

No More Infections

You can add another weapon to your arsenal against vaginal infections with an herbal detox formula. As we’ve suggested, bacteria overgrowth is the result of one or many factors – in cases like yours, it can be difficult to determine the exact cause. (TRY: Vaginal Infection Detox & Relief Formula) But a potent combination of herbs will at once allay those various factors and stimulate your body’s natural defenses. Ingredients like Fenugreek and Fo Ti eliminate excess toxins so your liver and immune system work at optimal levels. Herbs can also restore acidity to the vagina and increase the growth of friendly flora. In turn, you’ll enjoy a healthy and happy sex life free of embarrassing infections.
